Aaron Sims, an Indianapolis resident, started taking heroin when he as 18 years old. He died on Oct. 9, 2013, at age 20. His mother, Justin Phillips, has harnessed the tragedy to try and help others struggling with addiction. Her organization Overdoes Lifeline trains community members and first responders to use naloxone, the drug that reverses opioid addictions. The organization has passed out about 9,000 kits of the medication since forming in 2014.
