A former inside recreation area is now used as an overflow housing unit at the Johnson County jail. These inmates are night workers and are staying on cots as their pod has maintenance performed. Starting this summer, offenders convicted of crimes, such as theft or possession of narcotics, will no longer be sent to a state prison, and will instead stay here in the county jail that was overcrowded most of the fall.
