A former recreation area is now used as an overflow housing unit at the Johnson County jail. These inmates are night workers sleeping on cots as their pod gets maintenance work. But starting this summer, some offenders convicted of crimes, such as theft or possession of narcotics, will no longer be sent to a state prison, and will instead stay here in the county jail.
